Brian's first source
For my first source I chose the first scene in Dollhouse episode 1 season 2. One of the subjects that is going to get worked on complains about having an "oriental" work on her. She asks if she can have the white male work on her instead. If there is one that that I have learned since coming to Ohio State, its that everyone is equal. The fact that the girl insults the asain doctor is not only disrepectful but also rude. After realising that the male will not be working on her, she trys to complement the doctor with a vulger joke. This not only makes the situation awkward but also shows the subjects insecurity.

This is really interesting. You could explore how much racism still plays into daily life, as illustrated by this episode. You could look at how in America, even though we've politically eradicated racism, in some instances you can still see it socially. I'm really glad that you, like myself, see Ohio State as above the racism, but I'm sure you could find sects of America that aren't. Even if you look at the very far right on the political spectrum you can see some racism playing out. It's interesting how they slide it in in this episode, with her refusing a doctor.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you! I think it's really stupid when people try to make racism funny. Personally, I find it hard to believe that any sound-minded person can possibly believe in all the careless stereotypes out there. I feel like a racist joke reveals more about the person telling the joke than anything else.
